Baker Middle School math teacher selected as MCSD 2019 Teacher of the Year

MCSD 2019 TOTYThe Muscogee Educational Excellence Foundation (MEEF) has named Dacia Irvin the 2019 Muscogee County School District Teacher of the Year at a gala honoring 57 Teacher of the Year Honorees.

Ms. Irvin teaches 6th and 7th grade math at Baker Middle School, she’s a Math Support Team Central Region Facilitator, a PAGE Academic Bowl Team Coach, Math Team coach, and a Student Council Advisor.

She was chosen as the most outstanding representative of the teaching faculty of MCSD. Ms. Irvin has a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Troy University and a Master of Education in Middle Grades Math from Columbus State University. The MEEF Selection Committee was impressed with Dacia’s connection with her students.
“Dacia has a unique way of connecting with her students,” Selection Committee Chair Tom Hacket said. “Her classroom was
thrilling and her passion for these kids was palpable. It was hard to get the committee to leave her classroom.”

Dacia makes sure every student who comes into her classroom knows they are cared for and held to a high standard.

In her seven years as an educator Dacia has learned some important lessons, “Educating children is so much more than the sum of knowledge retained by our students at the end of the year. It is about planting and nurturing a seed of hope. We are the ones who believe in our children when no one else will,” she says.

The TOTY Selection Committee refers to Ms. Irvin as a ‘teacher’s teacher’ as her passion for her students, her dedication to learning more, and the way she inspires longtime teachers is remarkable.

As MCSD 2019 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Irvin is featured on an OutFront Media digital billboard, a full-page Ledger ad, and she receives a $5,000 honorarium.

Congratulations Dacia Irvin!
