Updated Covid-19 Quarantine Guidelines

Muscogee County School District

2960 Macon Road Columbus, GA 31906

For Immediate Release

Columbus, GA- Recognizing the importance of in-person learning, the Department of Public Health issued an Administrative Order allowing school districts to update their Covid-19 quarantined guidelines. In monitoring recent local health conditions and collaborating with the medical professionals of the Muscogee County School District (MCSD) Medical Panel, there is unanimous agreement for the District to utilize the flexibility authorized by the guidance.

Effective October 27, 2021, students within close contact to someone who tests positive for COVID-19 in school are no longer required to be quarantined from in-person classroom instruction, as long as the close contact happened in a classroom setting and everyone was wearing masks covering their nose and mouth.

This guidance is intended ONLY for student close contacts that occur in classrooms, classroom-like settings, and other situations essential for instruction of K-12 students. Classroom-like settings are school-associated activities that are set up and supervised like a classroom and allow for universal masking by all students and staff. Other situations essential for instruction would include riding the bus.

Close contacts occurring in the following settings will still require quarantine from all school settings, including in-person attendance in the classroom:

  • Classroom and other essential settings do NOT extend to include strenuous activities, or other circumstances likely to result in increased production of respiratory droplets, such as school activities where masking is either not feasible or is not effective at preventing transmission of COVID-19 such as lunch, band, choir, PE, and sports.
  • Household and household-like exposure
  • Exposure during out-of-school activities

Protocols and processes currently being used by Muscogee County School District to identify cases and close contacts will not change. All identified cases and close contacts will be reported to the Department of Public Health, affected students, staff, and teachers will be notified of direct contact, as is the school districts’ current policy. For additional guidance and mitigation strategies, please contact your student’s school who will connect you with the COVID-19 Liaison for additional information or visit our website at https://www.muscogee.k12.ga.us/Staff. All updated guidance is evaluated with the support and collaboration of the MCSD medical panel, and MCSD reserves the right to reinstate any mitigation protocols in the future as deemed necessary.

Parents may choose to self-quarantine after learning of a direct contact. All such absences will be considered as excused.

Per Department of Public Health Recommendation, this guidance applies to students only. Staff that are not vaccinated will continue with the recommended guidelines put in place for close contacts.

As always, students should stay home when sick and consider the following:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Help young children do the same
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Limit close contact, like kissing and sharing cups or utensils, with people who are sick
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe
  • Cover your cough or sneeze
  • Consult with their doctor to discuss if COVID-19 vaccination is recommended

This pandemic continues to impact our community, and we will continue to monitor conditions and update District protocols accordingly.

The mission of the Muscogee County School District is to inspire and equip all students to achieve unlimited potential. For more information, please contact the Office of Communications at 706.748.2034 or communications@muscogee.k12.ga.us.
