History: Baker High School (Columbus, Georgia) was built in 1943 and named for Newton Diehl Baker, Secretary of War during World War I. Baker High served Columbus and Fort Benning for nearly fifty years, producing graduates who excelled in scholarship, athletics, and the arts. The last class of seniors graduated on June 6, 1991. The Baker name lives on at Baker Middle School a few blocks east on Benning Drive. On May 18, 2013; a historical marker was placed at the site of the former school by the Historic Chattahoochee Commission and the Baker High School Alumni Association. The tradition of striving towards educational excellence and serving the community lives on at Baker Middle School.

School Accolades

We are proud to have Brinique Wright, an 8th grade student who received the REACH (Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen) scholarship for the 2016-2017 school year. This scholarship includes 10,000 dollars in financial college support, social support through mentorship, academic support, and activities to improve student and parent engagement.

Robotics Competition 2017, 1st Place Varsity was awarded to Baker Middle School. Baker Middle School’s Robotics Team members are Oscar Palacio-Mauricio (6th grade), Christopher Contreras-Lozano (6th grade), Anthony West (8th grade), and Jacob Morris (8th grade).

Other positive updates include:

  • 2nd highest school district median growth percentile for Middle School Algebra I
  • 17 percentage point increase in on grade level literacy for 7th grade
  • 10 percentage point increase in on grade level literacy for 8th grade
  • 5 percentage point increase in 6th grade Math proficiency
  • 5 percentage point increase in 6th grade Science proficiency
  • 3 percentage point increase in 7th grade ELA proficiency
  • 8 percentage point increase in 8th grade Social Studies proficiency
